Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

In 2019, a workgroup was charged to advise the Chancellor, Executive Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs, Dean of the Division of Graduate Education, and Dean of Undergraduate Education on critical issues related to the experience of UC San Diego students, faculty, staff, and visitors with disabilities. The workgroup recommended the campus pursue an external review of our disability infrastructure. In response, during Winter 2021, an external review of disability services at UC San Diego was conducted by the Association of Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD). Due to the pandemic, all interviews with students, staff and faculty were conducted virtually via Zoom and no physical site visit was completed. Additionally, Health Sciences, including the School of Medicine and the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, will have a separate external review, which is being conducted during the 2022-2023 academic year.

This Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page provides more information on the work that has been conducted in the past two years, as well as plans to further address the review's recommendations. Information will be updated regularly on this website.

How will the student perspective be represented in the implementation process?

As appropriate, representatives from Associated Students (AS) and the Graduate and Professional Student Association (GPSA) will be contacted to determine how to best incorporate the student perspective.

How will the UC San Diego faculty and staff perspective be represented in the implementation process?

As appropriate, representatives from the Staff Association and Academic Senate will be contacted to determine how to best incorporate the faculty and staff perspective.

What areas of campus were covered by the AHEAD external review?

The Office for Students with Disabilities and Disability Counseling and Consulting were addressed in the review. However, since disability access covers all areas of campus, the review also considered physical access, electronic access, and campus culture.

Has any work already been completed as a result of this review?

Campus leadership has established a governance structure for addressing the AHEAD recommendations. We will be working with Associated Students (AS), Graduate and Professional Student Association (GPSA), Staff Association, and Academic Senate to address the identified recommendations provided by AHEAD. You can find additional details on current progress in the UC San Diego Accessibility Review page. Quarterly updates will also be posted on this website starting Fall 2023.
